Going green my ass

You look around and everywhere you go you are bombarded with “Save the Environment!” or “Go Green! Everyone else is doing it!” posters. The recycling craze has been in full swing for as long as I remember, so this seems like the next logical step to savor our natural resources. Awesome.

I walk into Bed, Bath and Everything Else You Don’t Need But You’ve Seen It On TV And Must Have It, simply to stop at the Café Beyond for a blueberry muffin. As soon as I walk in, one of the store bouncers attendants holds open one of those plastic umbrella bags (Yes, It was raining). I nod to him telling him I’m going over there (The Café is located before you enter the store.) He insisted that I “need one”. So I proceed to stick my umbrella into the bag. Boy, that sounds dirty. I walk over to the counter, feeling silly with this plastic covered umbrella, order my muffin and I’m out the door in less than a minute.

So tell me, was it really worth it for that one minute to waste a plastic bag, simply so the floor wouldn’t get slightly wet? Would it be, I dunno, somewhat more logical to extend the doorway mat in the vestibule all the way to the counter for these quick purchases? It makes absolutely no sense to waste an entire plastic bag (which wouldn’t be re-used since there was a non-recyclable garbage can full of these as I left) when I wasn’t even going to be spending hours at a time shopping for useless appliances that never get used more than once.
